KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry is drafting amendments to impose harsher penalties for cable theft offences that disrupt public transport services, including the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the proposal to invoke higher penalties must first go through the Parliamentary process.
"The proposal to increase penalties must go through Parliament.
"We are currently drafting those amendments. We will address that (heavier penalties). We have to finalise it first, so it is not appropriate for me to announce any details at this time," he said after opening the Transport Expo Asia 2026.
