The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says recent power outages recorded in some parts of the Ashanti Region is caused by equipment failures, cable faults and ongoing infrastructure upgrade works across the transmission and sub-transmission networks.
Officials of the power company have been explaining the rationale behind the unplanned outages at a Regulatory and Reliability Performance Monitoring Meeting attended by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and ECG at the company’s Boadi office in Kumasi on Friday, October 16, 2026.
The meeting, which forms part of PURC’s regulatory monitoring activities to assess electricity reliability and quality of service performance, also examines operational challenges while promoting compliance with service delivery standards in the interest of consumers.
The General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission was deputized by Ing. James Mensah Yevunya, Manager for Network Maintenance at the meeting.
According to Ing Yevunya, the recent supply challenges had been caused by two current transformer (CT) blasts on the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) network and a cable fault at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP).
He explained that ongoing infrastructure upgrade projects by both GRIDCo and ECG had placed additional operational constraints on the system during the period.
He revealed that while GRIDCo is upgrading its transformer capacity from 50/66MVA to 120/145MVA to supply the Ridge BSP, ECG, on the other hand, is installing new 8-way 33kV panels at Ridge to accommodate the increased capacity and also facilitate improved power distribution.
Ing. Yevunya assured PURC of expedited work by ECG on installations to ensure the company receives and utilise the upgraded capacity to support improved electricity supply to consumers across the region.
Ashanti Regional Manager of PURC, Mr. Edward Boduah Kingston, urged ECG to keep the Commission regularly updated on ongoing infrastructure projects and operational developments to enable the public to receive timely and accurate information about electricity supply conditions.
He also called for adequate resourcing of ECG’s Public Relations office to strengthen collaboration with the media and PURC in communicating technical operations and service challenges in a manner that consumers can readily understand.
At the meeting were Ing. Nicholas Frempong, Principal Manager, Energy Services and Performance Monitoring (ESPM) Directorate, PURC; Edward Boduah Kingston, Ashanti Regional Manager, PURC; Ing. Enyonam Kumi, Principal Regulatory Engineer, ESPM Directorate, PURC. Others include Cecil Oduro Nyarko, Regulatory Engineer, ESPM Directorate, PURC, Ing. James Mensah Yevunya, Manager for Network Maintenance, ECG, Ing. Edem Evans Agra, Manager for Substation and Switchgear Maintenance, ECG and Ing. Andrews Appiah Sam, Acting Manager, Operations ECG as well as Mrs. Cynthia Abrafi Mensah, Manager HR, ECG and Collins Manu (APR), Head of Public Relations for Ashanti Sub-Transmission.
