Aaron Guzikowski, the screenwriter behind Denis Villeneuve's thriller Prisoners, has been hired to write a new Alien film for 20th Century Studios, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed. Deadline has since confirmed the news.
The project reunites Guzikowski with Sir Ridley Scott, who executive produced and directed the first two episodes of Raised by Wolves, the HBO Max science-fiction series Guzikowski created. Scott will produce through his Scott Free banner alongside Michael Pruss but is not currently set to direct, and no director is attached. J.R. Young is overseeing the film for the studio.
Plot details remain under wraps, and Deadline describes the film as being in very early development. However, The Hollywood Reporter's sources say it is not a sequel to 2024's Alien: Romulus. Instead, it is reportedly linked to Scott's prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant through David, the amoral android played by Michael Fassbender, although the actor is not attached.
As Empire noted, the news follows an August interview with the Los Angeles Times in which Scott said he still hoped to make a third prequel centred on David.
Guzikowski is also writing an animated Death Stranding film and adapting a Philip K Dick short story for Sony Pictures.
