Vietnamese shipowner Hai An Transport and Stevedoring has approved an investment of up to $70m in two feeder containerships at a Chinese shipyard, adding another pair of vessels to its expanding newbuilding programme.
The Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange-listed company has outlined plans for two 1,928 teu vessels at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard, with China Shipbuilding Trading also involved in the project.
A letter of intent signed in August values the shipbuilding package at $66.96m, or $33.48m per vessel. The remaining funds under the approved $70m ceiling will cover initial equipment, project personnel and associated expenses.
The ships are scheduled for completion by the end of October and November 2029, respectively.
The latest project adds to an extensive fleet expansion programme undertaken by the Vietnamese owner.
Last November, Hai An signed up for its largest containerships to date, contracting Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co for up to four 7,100 teu vessels through its Hai An Green Shipping Lines joint venture with Viconship.
Earlier in 2025, the company ordered two firm 3,000 teu ships, with options for another pair, at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s Jiangsu New Yangzi facility. Those vessels are designed for the company’s move into larger ship classes, while the newly approved 1,928 teu pair will add capacity in the feeder segment where Hai An established its business.
