PETALING JAYA: Kollywood filmmaker Nelson Dilipkumar has become the Tamil film industry’s “it” boy.
He has delivered crowd-pleasing action thrillers starring some of Kollywood’s biggest names, complete with jaw-dropping character entrances, stylish cuts and clever plot twists. Add musical golden boy Anirudh to the mix, and you know you’re in for a ride.
Nelson’s Rajinikanth-starring “Jailer 2” promises just that. The director showed what he could do with a larger-than-life star in 2023’s “Jailer”, delivering a rollicking adventure.
The much-anticipated sequel expands that world, and for the most part, delivers. The action sequences are goosebump-inducing, Rajini’s signature displays of star power invite applause, and the cat-and-mouse chase with a host of antagonists is entertaining – until it isn’t.
The story picks up several months after the first film. “Tiger” Muthuvel Pandian (Rajini) has moved his family to another state, seemingly to escape the criminal underworld. The former jailer, once feared for his iron-fist rule, is now a lowly supermarket supervisor, unaware that dangerous forces are hunting him.
The first half follows Muthuvel as he becomes the driver of local thug Moorthi (Namo Narayana). This is where the comedy shines, with Yogi Babu, reprising his role as Vimal, and Namo delivering understated humour.
As Muthuvel steers Moorthi deeper into the world of ancient artefact smuggling, the story builds towards a warehouse sequence that allows Rajini to fully embrace his superstar status.
The second half shifts gears with the arrival of the main antagonists, raising the stakes considerably. Muthuvel faces off against the Kalpak criminal family, played by SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty, in a high-octane showdown that sets the stage for a possible third instalment.
Nelson understands what Rajini’s fans want: swagger, killer punchlines and power-packed scenes of the superstar outsmarting and eliminating villains. Explosions, gunshots and elaborate schemes come thick and fast, with occasional emotional moments thrown in.
There is little time to question the logic or narrative flow, but that is not necessarily a deal-breaker. Audiences do not flock to Rajini films for watertight plotting; they come for the elevated hero moments. For the most part, “Jailer 2” delivers, with Rajini’s charisma and effortless swagger carrying the action.
However, spectacle alone cannot sustain a story, and this is where the sequel falters. At least 40% of the film could have been left on the cutting-room floor to make for a tighter narrative.
The first half spends too much time on the entertaining but meandering Muthuvel-Moorthi subplot, leaving the second half feeling like an entirely different movie.
The shift from relatively grounded villains to bigger-than-life, sometimes campy antagonists further disrupts the momentum. In fact, the tit-for-tat between Muthuvel and the Kalpal family was so repetitive it became a tad predictable.
Vidya Balan deserves special mention for her portrayal of Kantha. She proves a worthy match for Rajini, bringing her own brand of swagger, smugness and understated menace. Their dynamic recalls, albeit faintly, the memorable clash between Rajini and Ramya Krishnan’s Neelambari in “Padayappa” (1999).
Of course, Anirudh’s pulsating score adds plenty of energy to “Jailer 2”, amplifying Rajini’s entrances and giving the action sequences an extra kick. His music knows exactly when to crank up the excitement, complementing the film’s bold style and explosive set pieces.
Ultimately, “Jailer 2” is an entertaining but overstuffed sequel that mistakes more for better. Rajini remains a commanding screen presence, and there are enough crowd-pleasing moments to keep his fans happy.
But with tighter editing and a more coherent story, Nelson could have delivered something far more genre defining.
As of press time, ‘Jailer 2’ is screening in cinemas nationwide.
