Ahead of Security Council talks on a new resolution on the Sahara, France wants the text to give Morocco’s autonomy plan a much clearer place, a high-level diplomatic source told Médias24. The draft under discussion includes the renewal of the mandate of the UN mission, MINURSO. The source said the French position reflects a growing international consensus around the plan.
According to the source, Paris considers the autonomy plan the only basis for a fair, lasting and negotiated political solution to the long-running conflict, and wants the new text to reflect that view clearly. The source recalled France’s role in securing Resolution 2797 of 2025 and stressed the need to move forward, and expressed hope that the first discussions would help end the conflict.
France is also coordinating closely with its partners ahead of the Council’s upcoming consultations, the source added, as the first discussions on the text get under way.
