The Australia-based AI infrastructure company withdrew its ASX listing application around October 9, 2026, after demand failed to show up at its proposed valuation.
What Firmus was asking for
The proposed offering aimed to raise between $5.5 billion and $8 billion AUD. Shares were set at A$11 each.
At that price, Firmus would have carried a market capitalization of approximately A$43 billion to A$44 billion. That would have made it one of the largest listings of its kind in Australia.
Just months earlier, in August 2026, Firmus had raised private money at a valuation of $10.5 billion. The IPO price implied a valuation nearly three times that funding round.
Much of the skepticism centered on execution. Firmus currently has data centers running on around 46 megawatts of power. The company plans to expand significantly across the Asia-Pacific region, but buying into a A$43 billion company on the strength of 46 megawatts means paying today for capacity that mostly exists in a slide deck.
Investor concerns also included heavy future funding needs. Building data centers is capital-intensive, and a company promising rapid expansion is also promising to keep asking for money.
A company with serious friends
Its backers include Nvidia, Blackstone, and Jane Street. Its client list includes OpenAI and Meta.
Market conditions did not help. The withdrawal came amid concerns about volatility, and the broader AI infrastructure financing sector has been struggling as interest rates rise.
Higher rates raise the cost of borrowing to build data centers, and they make investors less willing to pay up today for profits expected years from now.
What comes next for Firmus and AI infrastructure
With the ASX route closed for now, Firmus is signaling a shift toward private capital. The company may also explore other public options. A potential listing on Nasdaq has been floated as one possibility, though nothing in the reporting confirms a plan or a timeline.
There is also a lesson about sequencing. Raising privately at one valuation and then asking public investors to pay nearly three times that within months invites comparison. For investors watching the space, several things are worth tracking: whether Firmus raises fresh private capital and at what valuation relative to its August round, whether a Nasdaq listing moves from possibility to filing, and how quickly Firmus can grow beyond its current 46 megawatts.
