Etsy will no longer let merchants sell recipes, patterns, or instructions created with artificial intelligence. The ban covers a product category the company calls “functional guides,” and it is part of a broader effort to tighten AI rules across the marketplace.
Etsy announced the change Thursday in a blog post. The rules apply immediately to both new and existing listings, and they are also laid out in the company’s Seller Handbook.
What Etsy is banning, and what it isn’t
The targets are digital downloads that tell buyers how to make something. That includes knitting, crochet, and sewing patterns, cooking recipes, and assembly instructions.
Sellers of these products now face a new burden of proof. Listings must show an actual finished result made from the instructions, not an AI-rendered simulation of what the result might look like.
The ban is not a blanket rejection of AI. Etsy will still allow AI-assisted creative work, provided sellers disclose that AI was involved and keep a genuine creative role in the product.
There are limits on that, too. Listings generated entirely by bots are prohibited, and sellers cannot present AI-assisted items as handmade.
Why functional guides got singled out
Instructional content occupies an awkward spot in the AI debate. A buyer can usually judge a piece of digital art at a glance, but a pattern or recipe only proves itself after the buyer has spent hours, money, and materials following it.
That is where AI-generated guides tend to fall apart. Errors in instructions can leave buyers with a lopsided blanket, a collapsed cake, or a pile of wasted yarn, and Etsy cited buyer dissatisfaction from those kinds of failures as a reason for the crackdown.
Craft sellers had been raising alarms for some time. Sellers in those communities complained of sales drops of 30% to 50% as AI-generated content spread across the platform during 2025 and 2026, and they said the flood of low-quality listings was eroding buyer confidence.
Etsy framed the update as a move to protect consumer trust. The company is betting that buyers will return if they believe the patterns and recipes on its site actually work.
A marketplace built on the word “handmade”
Etsy has long sold itself as the place to find things made by people rather than factories. Its brand depends on buyers believing that the listing in front of them reflects real work by a real person.
Generative AI scrambled that premise. Tools that can spit out endless patterns, recipes, and product mockups in seconds made it cheap to fill storefronts with digital goods, and much harder for buyers to tell skilled designers from prompt operators.
What this means for sellers, buyers, and other platforms
For human pattern designers and recipe creators, the policy offers some relief. If enforcement works, the competition from mass-produced AI listings should shrink, which could help stabilize sales for creators who were losing ground.
Sellers who relied heavily on AI face a sharper choice. They will need to make and photograph the items their guides describe, shift toward disclosed AI-assisted products that fit the remaining rules, or leave the category entirely.
Buyers stand to benefit most directly. A listing that must show a completed project offers at least some evidence that the instructions have been tested by someone.
The disclosure requirement also gives shoppers more information. Someone who wants a purely human-designed product can now, in theory, make that distinction before checking out.
The next signals to watch are practical ones. That includes how aggressively Etsy removes existing listings, whether craft sellers report any recovery in sales, and whether rival platforms adopt similar disclosure and proof-of-product requirements.
