Duchovny has spent the past decade developing his career as a songwriter and recording artist, releasing music that combines melodic rock with introspective lyrics.
Prince of Pieces is his fourth album and brings together a small group of musicians and longtime collaborators.
The new record follows Hell or Highwater, Every Third Thought, released in 2017, and Gestureland, released in 2021. According to the album’s press release, the latest project is his most cohesive and collaborative work to date, reflecting the relationships he has built with fellow musicians over the years.
Duchovny’s music has received positive reviews from critics.
AllMusic described his sound as “eloquent, alt-rock-kissed country-folk in the vein of Wilco and the Wallflowers,” while The Boston Globe praised his voice for its “parched resonance and just a hint of rasp,” adding that he sings with feeling.

The actor has said that the arrangements on his records are shaped by the mood and rhythm of each song, rather than following a single formula.
“The arrangements of the songs have always been in service of either the groove or the emotion,” Duchovny said. He added that he looks for sounds that complement the melody, including horns, bells and harmonies, while also experimenting with rhythms and beats.
