SHILLONG, Oct 16: Truck drivers engaged with Star Cement through North East Carriers Pvt. Ltd. will resume work from October 19 after the management accepted their demands, ending a strike that lasted over two weeks.
The decision was taken at a meeting in East Jaintia Hills on Thursday, where drivers agreed to call off the stir after being briefed on the resolutions reached during talks with company representatives in Shillong on October 15.
The settlement was brokered by the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA), led by president Moslander Marngar and adviser Kyrmenlang Uriah, in discussions involving Star Cement, North East Carriers Pvt. Ltd., and driver representatives.
Under the agreement, the company will provide drivers with copies of their signed employment contracts, along with Khasi translations.
It was also agreed that no driver would be denied wages for reporting to duty, subject to their employment contract. In turn, drivers cannot claim ownership of company-owned trucks and must operate assigned vehicles strictly according to the employer’s instructions.
The terms require both the management and the workforce to adhere to workplace rules fairly and without discrimination. Driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances has been barred, and only duly employed and authorised drivers will be permitted to operate the vehicles.
Both sides agreed to abide by the resolutions to maintain workplace discipline, safety, and operational transparency.
