After one week off, the Florida Power & Light Girls Athlete of the Week returns.
We took a break from the award as the Pensacola area recovered from Hurricane Isaias, so this week’s results will feature performances from the last two weeks.
Girls sports returned to the area last week with volleyball district tournaments. Navarre (6A), Pensacola Catholic (3A) and Jay (Rural) all won district titles and will be joined by Gulf Breeze (5A) and Booker T. Washington (4A) in the state playoffs, which start this week.
Pensacola Catholic and West Florida cross country competed in the New World Fall Spectacular in Jacksonville on Oct. 17, while Pensacola Christian competed at the Randolph Invite in Huntsville, Alabama the same day.
Besides the volleyball playoffs, the swimming and diving postseason starts this week, with the District 1-3A diving championships at Booker T. Washington on Oct. 20 and the District 1-3A swimming championships at Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach on Oct. 22.
Now it’s time to meet the nominees for this week’s Florida Power & Light PNJ Girls Athlete of the Week. Tate volleyball’s Torrie Garret won the award two weeks ago with 82.1 % of the vote.
Now it’s time to make your voice heard again. Voting closes at 11 a.m Saturday, and the winners will be announced each Monday after the poll closes. Each weekly winner will be awarded a PNJ Athlete of the Week shirt provided by BSN SPORTS. An athlete can only win one time per season.
Nominees will be accepted via phone or email, but the poll is decided by PNJ staff. Send nominations by Sunday night.
