With the likes of Andie MacDowell and, more recently, Olivia Colman showing off their gleaming silver strands, there’s been plenty of talk about grey hair – but perhaps less about the journey to get there.
Embracing your greys doesn’t have to mean going silver from root to tip overnight. The transition takes time and it isn’t always simple. Letting your greys grow in on their own can leave an unflattering line at the roots, while booking in to go silver in one sitting is quite the commitment.
Thankfully, a good colourist can help you avoid an awkward grow-out phase and make the process feel more intentional and stylish.
Having spoken to the hair pros, plus a little inspiration from some of our favourite A-Listers, we’ve rounded up five of the most flattering, low-maintenance and modern ways to make transition to grey.
The halo method

Kristin Scott Thomas
Sorry, brunettes – blondes do tend to have an easier time transitioning to grey. But that doesn’t mean brunettes can’t do it in style.
Enter the ‘halo’ method, which Kristin Scott Thomas proves can look incredibly chic. The name says it all: the technique involves embracing a silver ‘halo’ around the hairline, which is where most women go white first, according to A-list hairstylist Gustav Fouche. On Kristin, striking silver strands sit around the face before blending into her natural shade at the back.
The technique not only makes those white strands feel more intentional but can brighten the complexion, too. ‘It looks very clean and it really makes the skin pop. That contrast can really work on a lot of people,’ says Gustav.
In the salon, he recommends asking your stylist to enhance the colour you already have. ‘Look at where the hair is white and then get your hairdresser to make that white better and brighter, and where the hair is still naturally dark, make the dark better and richer by adding pigment.’
Greige lights

Emma Thompson embraces a flattering, multi-dimensional finish, with greys woven in
Blondes, take note of Emma Thompson, who proves that blonde pairs beautifully with silver. Her pixie features a multidimensional mix of shades, from soft buttery and beige hues to natural silver and ash grey.
Colourists refer to this as ‘greige lights’ and it’s praised for brightening and warming the complexion. Safe to say, Emma proves this true, looking absolutely radiant.
For anyone with lighter hair, it can be a gentle way to begin the transition to grey. As top hair trend forecaster Tom Smith puts it: ‘It reframes grey hair as aspirational and a valuable starting point on which to build, rather than fully conceal. It’s elegant and considered, rather than bold and shouty.’
Grey blending

Jennifer Aniston remains a true hair icon
When we think of hair icons, Jennifer Aniston is undoubtedly near the top of the list. ‘The Rachel’ took the beauty world by storm in the 90s and now she’s inspiring us with her silver strands, too.
Her glossy grey roots melt beautifully into her sunkissed bronde lengths. It’s a technique known as ‘grey blending’, which aims to make the transition to silver look seamless.
‘By weaving subtle lighter and cooler tones through the hair, you soften the contrast between natural greys and existing colour, avoiding that obvious line of regrowth,’ says Jason Collier, celebrity hairstylist, founder of Studio23 and key opinion leader at Jerome Russell Bblonde.
He also notes that it’s a low-maintenance technique, which is something we can always appreciate. ‘The softer contrast means regrowth is less noticeable and you can stretch out appointments,’ he tells us.
If it’s approved by Jen, then thats all the convincing we need.
Face-framing highlights

Sharon Stone fully embraces her silver roots
Sometimes, all it takes is a shift in perspective. Sharon Stone wears her multi-dimensional grey roots with pride – a mix of icy silver and charcoal. Doing so, she proves that those natural roots can double as flattering face-framing highlights.
‘Sharon shows how embracing silver around the hairline can look incredibly chic and intentional,’ says Jason. ‘Those lighter pieces catch the light, adding brightness and dimension, rather than making the grey look like something to hide.’
It’s all about working and embracing the pattern of your natural silver, making it a really low-maintenance approach.
Long silver streaks

Salma Hayek's natural silver strands act as sparkling highlights
Consider this your sign to rip up the beauty rulebook. With this look, Salma Hayek debunks two myths at once: that grey hair and long hair are ageing.
She proves that rogue greys are nothing to hide. Her deep tresses are sprinkled with silver stardust strands and she makes it look intentional and incredibly chic.
Paired with the long lengths, it’s a look the pros love and it’s easy to see why. ‘For years, people said that older women shouldn’t have long hair but, thankfully, more and more of them are ignoring that advice. It’s become far less of a hard and fast rule among my clients. Long hair is sexy hair and Salma just looks amazing – no one would be able to say with a straight face that she’s too old for this look,’ says award-winning hairstylist Phil Smith.
If anything, those silver pieces make her long locks stand out even more.
