When the Vogue Book Club selected Sense and Sensibility as its latest focus, Chloe’s first question to the staff was: Are you an Elinor or a Marianne? Given Chloe herself identifies as an Elinor—even if she is, by her own admission, Marianne-presenting—it was only fitting that Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays Elinor in Georgia Oakley’s new adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel, joined the podcast for a live, post-screening taping at the Metrograph in New York.
Of course, Daisy is no stranger to a book adaptation; her breakout role was in Hulu’s Normal People, based on the novel by Sally Rooney. But Sense and Sensibility marked her first period piece—and her first time being asked to appear barefaced on screen.
“Georgia was like, ‘We’re having no makeup in this film.’ Esmé [Creed-Miles, who plays Marianne] and I were like, ‘Not even ChapStick?’ She was like, ‘Nothing.’ And then Esmé and I would sneak a little bit of ChapStick onto set, and Georgia would be like, ‘Take it off. I can see it!’” Daisy recalled.
The experience inspired Daisy to go makeup-free more often in her personal life—and even get more comfortable “embracing her mustache.” She also took the film’s emphasis on sisterhood beyond the script and into real life, hosting sleepovers with Creed-Miles, where they watched Love Island together. (“It was like Dashwood camp,” Daisy said.)
With Vogue’s screening as her final stop in the Sense and Sensibility press tour—for which she has method-dressed with aplomb—Daisy selected a partly sheer archival Rodarte slip dress with a sweet message. “Dani Michelle is my stylist, and she is just a genius. She was like, ‘We are ending the tour with a big heart.’ She was like, ‘This film is so romantic, and we need to end with a big heart for the Dashwoods,’ and I was like, ‘Dani, I love you.’”
