President Donald Trump spent much of Thursday going after Philadelphia 76ers star LeBron James over his behavior during the national anthem, demanding an apology from the NBA legend. But it doesn’t sound like James is all that worried about it.
After helping the Sixers pull off a historic comeback win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night, James was asked about the president’s comments. And he responded with a simple, sarcastic one-liner, suggesting that he wasn’t concerned about what the president had to say.
Trump Targets LeBron
Before the Sixers’ season opener against the New York Knicks on Tuesday, video shared by ClutchPoints went viral on social media showing James swinging his arms as if practicing a golf swing during the national anthem, then going through his shooting motion. Most of his teammates were standing still around him.
The moment drew backlash from conservative pundits, and on Thursday, Trump demanded an apology on Truth Social.
“While listening to our National Anthem, LeBron James disrespects our Country! I said right from the beginning that he’s no good, a TOTAL DISGRACE,” Trump wrote, via TheWrap. “LeBron James should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag, and all that our Country stands for!”
Trump wasn’t done there. Later on Thursday, he imitated James’ golf swing while speaking about it again.
“What the hell is that? No, it’s a big scandal kind of a story. What’s it all about? I don’t understand it. I don’t understand it,” Trump said on Thursday night
‘Slow News Day’
While there were some rather scathing words from Trump, James clearly wasn’t too bothered.
“Must (have been) a slow news day at the office, you know? Slow news day in the office,” James said after the game, via USA Today.
And James had plenty to smile about on Thursday night. The Sixers trailed the Cavaliers by 29 points in their home opener before storming back for a 114-106 win, the biggest comeback in franchise history in the play-by-play era and the biggest of James’ career, according to ClutchPoints.
James finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and three steals, leading to a historic comeback to improve to 2-0.
This is far from the first time the two have gone back and forth. Trump has taken shots at James dating back to his first term, and James famously vowed in 2018 that he would “definitely not shut up and dribble” after being criticized by Fox News host Laura Ingraham.
