The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has arrested a 49-year-old Honeydew police sergeant accused of raping a teenage relative who was 14 when the abuse allegedly began.
The victim is now 20-years-old. The officer was arrested on Thursday, October 23 in connection with alleged sexual violations that took place between 2022 and October 2024.
He is facing charges of rape and sexual grooming.
According to IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping, the victim had been under the care of her aunt, who was married to the suspect, after losing both her parents.
''It started when the aunt of the victim was hospitalised and the suspect would force himself on the young girl in her room.
''It is further alleged that throughout this period, the suspect intimidated and threatened the victim not to say a word about the alleged sexual act,'' Suping said.
The officer was detained at Moroka holding cells and is expected to appear at the Protea Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 26.
IPID records increase in rape cases involving officers
The arrest comes as IPID reports an increase in rape cases allegedly committed by police officers.
“In the financial year 2025/2026, IPID registered 116 cases of rape committed by officers. Gauteng was the second highest province with 21 cases after the Eastern Cape.”
IPID also reported an increase in cases received, from 95 in the 2024/2025 financial year to 116 in 2025/2026.
