Aizawl, Oct 14: Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region Dr. Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday inspected the ongoing construction of the Aizawl Western Bypass under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DeVINE) scheme and directed the contractor to expedite the work to ensure timely completion.
During his visit to the Sihhmui base camp, Dr. Majumdar interacted with Public Works Department (PWD) officials and representatives of the construction company to review the project’s progress. He instructed the contractor to deploy additional labourers and machinery to accelerate construction and complete the work within the stipulated timeframe.
Considering the bypass’s strategic importance in easing Aizawl’s traffic congestion and supporting the city’s planned expansion, the Minister also suggested constructing an additional approach road connecting Aizawl city to the bypass with funds from the State Government.
PWD officials stated that the 45-kilometre bypass, connecting Sihhmui in Sairang to Muallungthu, would improve connectivity to Lengpui Airport, Sairang Railway Station, the Industrial Growth Centre at Luangmual, Zoram Medical College and Hospital, and southern Mizoram. The road is also expected to improve access to Reiek, a popular tourist destination, boost tourism, facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce and create better livelihood opportunities for residents of surrounding areas.
The officials further proposed that tourism-oriented infrastructure and beautification works be incorporated into a separate project under the forthcoming PM-DeVINE scheme. They noted that such improvements would enhance the area’s aesthetic appeal and strengthen road safety for motorists and tourists.
The Aizawl Western Bypass project was sanctioned at ₹500 crore on February 10, 2024. RG Buildwell Engineers Pvt. Ltd. was selected as the contractor, and the notice to commence work was issued on January 16, 2026.
As of October 14, 2026, 33.61 per cent of the construction work had been completed. The project is scheduled to be completed by January 16, 2028.
