MOSCOW — The growing impact of artificial intelligence on information and public trust took center stage at the Second Global Digital Forum in Moscow, where South Sudan emphasized the urgent need to address both the risks and benefits of emerging digital tools.
Media leaders and government representatives gathered in the Russian capital from October 8 to 10 to evaluate declining public trust in media institutions amid the expanding influence of artificial intelligence and social media networks.
The Media Authority Managing Director, Ajou Luol, led South Sudan’s delegation to the international summit, which convened government officials and delegation heads to examine challenges and opportunities across the digital landscape.
Speaking to the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation following a panel discussion on media trust in the artificial intelligence era, Luol stated that the delegation evaluated digital governance frameworks utilized globally.
He noted that the insights underscore the necessity for the government to introduce institutional measures integrating digital technology into public administration.
Highlighting the global scale of technological transformation, Luol stressed that South Sudan must actively understand and navigate the positive and negative implications of artificial intelligence.
“We learned from this forum that there is a need for our government to put in place measures utilizing the digital aspect of governance,” Luol stated. “AI has become an issue that is very important and crucial to the world, and we are part of this world. That is why we came to participate on this issue.”
Luol pointed to critical hurdles facing modern information ecosystems, identifying hate speech, disinformation, and misinformation as pressing challenges requiring coordinated regulatory responses.
The panel discussion specifically targeted declining public trust as audiences increasingly consume news through artificial intelligence systems, algorithmic social media feeds, and digital assistants.
The forum concluded sessions focused on digital governance, innovation, and international cooperation, drawing representatives from across regions to address the future of information integrity.
