Pakistani filmmaker Kamran Faiq’s short film The Last Glance has qualified for the 2028 Academy Awards longlist after winning the Jury Award for Best Short at the 21st Tasveer Film Festival in Seattle, held from October 13 to 18.
Faiq confirmed that The Last Glance was the only film from the festival to qualify for the Oscars. He explained that thousands of short films compete for qualification, but only around 200 make it through.
However, he clarified that the film has not received an Oscar nomination and has only qualified to compete. The production team is also working to bring an Oscar-nominated actor on board as an executive producer to represent the film during next year’s Oscars campaign.
The Last Glance follows the story of a family forced to flee their village in the middle of the night to escape violence. The film stars Adnan Shah Tipu, Areej Ayub, and Fahad Hashmi, among others.
Written, directed, and produced by Faiq, the film also features Umer Peerzada as producer, Khalid Saeed Khan as executive producer, and Mike McNamara and Armeena Rana Khan as co-producers.
The film has also gained recognition at other international film festivals. It recently won the Best International Short Film award at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival in Canada.
Additionally, Faiq announced that The Last Glance had been selected as one of eight finalists for the short film program at the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles. The finalists were selected from films representing more than 50 Asian countries.
The film’s achievements highlight the growing international recognition of Pakistani filmmakers, although its qualification for the Oscars does not guarantee a nomination.
