GEORGE TOWN: A fallen tree damaged part of the roof of a famous resort in Batu Ferringhi this morning, with no casualties reported.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said the department received a distress call at 8.03am today.
“The incident involved a tree that fell and struck a small section of the hotel’s roof structure. No vehicles or casualties were reported to have been involved,” he said in a statement.
Firefighters from the Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene, about 8km away, at 8.16am, 13 minutes after receiving the call.
Traffic congestion had delayed their journey.
The fallen tree was identified as an angsana measuring about 20 metres in height and 3.6 metres in diameter.
Six firefighters, including a supervisor, were deployed with one fire engine to cut up and clear the fallen tree.
The operation was led by PBK I 9910 Saiful Bahari bin Mohamad, with assistance from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), whose personnel were also at the scene.
The operation ended at 9.45am after firefighters ensured there were no further hazards at the location.
The resort began operations in 2018 and is located beside Miami Beach in Batu Ferringhi, overlooking the Strait of Malacca.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had forecast thunderstorms over Penang waters until 9am today. Thunderstorms were also forecast in parts of the state amid wet weather conditions.
