I tend to avoid festivals in the UK as I do not see myself standing under the rain, not taking a hot shower for four days and sleeping in a tent – sorry Glastonbury fans. Thankfully, Europe has a vast choice of festivals catering to every musical taste, but also every kind of setting.
The best festivals in Europe are a particularly eclectic bunch. There are sun-soaked events that have long drawn the biggest names in commercial music, such as Hungary’s Sziget and Primavera Sound in Barcelona and Porto, attracting music-loving hordes from around the world. Fans of EDM, drum and bass and cutting-edge techno are particularly well catered for, with Croatia becoming quite the festival hub in recent years; long-running Hideout Festival has been joined by more recent additions to the summer calendar such as Terminal V Croatia.
But it’s not all about frozen cocktails on sun-kissed beaches, with festivalgoers heading to the French Alps for Snowboxx Festival, which combines chalet stays, skiing and live music each March. And if Bad Bunny helped you develop a passion for Latin sounds, you are in luck as one of Europe's biggest celebrations of Latin and Afro-Cuban music is held in a small town in southwestern France. Whatever type of music does it for you, whatever budget you’re working with, there’s sure to be something among Europe’s best festivals to warrant a hedonistic escape you’ll never forget.

Sziget, Hungary
László MudraSziget, Hungary
Best for: big-name headliners and a city break
Next dates: 10–14 August 2027
Headliners: TBC
Tickets: Already on sale. Five-day passes are currently advertised from €349 (£295), plus a €23 (£19) handling fee. There are also discounted passes for under-21s.
Sziget's line-up is usually so packed with big names that it's often tricky to decipher who precisely the headliner is. Previous editions have welcomed everyone from Kylie Minogue and Halsey to Charli XCX and Chappell Roan, with a mix of pop, rock, indie and electronic music spread across multiple stages. But there's much more to Sziget than the music. Taking over Óbuda Island in the middle of the Danube, the five-day festival also features art installations, theatre, circus performances and workshops, while Budapest's famous ruin bars, thermal baths and cultural attractions are within easy reach. Festivalgoers can camp on the island or make a proper city break of it by staying in the Hungarian capital. The 2027 line-up is yet to be announced, but five-day passes are already on sale from €349 (£295), plus booking fees.
