Mikel Arteta inherited a difficult situation when he became Arsenal manager at the end of 2019, with the club struggling to meet expectations and lacking the consistency required to compete with the leading teams in England. He faced the challenge of changing the team’s culture while building a squad capable of challenging for major honours.
Arsenal had underachieved in the period before his arrival, and the Spaniard needed to introduce a new approach to improve performances and restore confidence. Although he was relatively inexperienced as a manager, Arteta had spent three years working as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, where he witnessed a winning culture and the standards required to dominate the Premier League.
That experience helped shape his approach at Arsenal. He set about changing the environment around the team, establishing expectations for the players and working to create a stronger collective mentality. Over time, the Gunners developed greater cohesion, with the manager seeking to build a squad in which every player understood their responsibilities.
Arteta highlights Arsenal’s team spirit
Arsenal have since established themselves among the leading teams in Europe, with the chemistry within the squad becoming an important part of their progress. Arteta has worked to build an environment in which players support one another and remain committed to the team’s objectives, whether they start matches or come off the bench.
That unity has helped the Gunners compete consistently, while the manager’s emphasis on collective responsibility has encouraged players to contribute even when circumstances are disappointing. Maintaining that mentality remains important as Arsenal pursue further success in domestic and European competitions.
Ahead of the Everton game, Arteta spoke about the options available to him and the attitude of his players, as quoted by Arsenal Media:
“We have really good options because they’re in the right mindset.
“I’m extremely proud of the chemistry and the desire we have created among the players who both start and finish the game.

Substitutes have a crucial role to play
“We’ve seen a great example with Ebz, who could have been upset and certainly was when he was substituted after 45 minutes at Forest, and then came in and made the impact he did on Wednesday.
“That’s exactly what you need – you have a bench that can be strong as strong as you want, but they have to give you what you need.”
Arteta’s comments underline the importance he places on maintaining a positive attitude throughout the squad. Players must be ready to contribute whenever called upon, regardless of whether they begin a match or are introduced later.
For Arsenal, developing that collective mentality could remain a key factor in their continued progress. With competition for places high, the manager will need his players to maintain their commitment and ensure the team’s strength extends beyond the starting eleven.
