The bank's tokenized deposit system will now settle on a public blockchain alongside its existing private network.
JPMorgan has moved to expand its JPM Coin deposit token onto Ethereum, according to reports published by The Cryptonomist and The Block. The expansion targets institutional clients seeking faster payment and settlement options. It builds on a system the bank has run internally for several years.
JPM Coin began as a tool for settling transactions between JPMorgan's institutional clients on a permissioned, bank-operated network. That system allowed large corporate and institutional users to move dollar-denominated value between accounts with near-instant finality. Extending that functionality to Ethereum would mark a shift from a closed ledger toward interoperability with public blockchain infrastructure.
Deposit tokens like JPM Coin differ from stablecoins issued by non-bank companies. They represent a direct claim on deposits held at a regulated bank rather than reserves held by a separate issuer. That distinction matters for institutional treasurers and compliance teams, who often face stricter rules about counterparty risk and custody.
Bringing the token to Ethereum could let institutional clients tap into a broader ecosystem of smart contracts, decentralized applications, and other blockchain-based settlement tools. It would also position JPMorgan alongside other major financial institutions experimenting with public-chain settlement for wholesale payments and asset transfers.
The reported move comes amid growing interest from traditional banks in blockchain-based settlement infrastructure. Several large financial institutions have piloted tokenized deposits, repo transactions, and cross-border payment systems built on distributed ledgers over the past two years. JPMorgan has been among the most active, having processed significant transaction volume through its private blockchain unit, Kinexys, formerly known as Onyx.
Details on the specific scope of the Ethereum rollout, including which institutional clients will have access and what transaction types will be supported, were not fully specified in available reporting. Both outlets describe the expansion as focused on institutional payments and asset settlement rather than retail use.
Market Impact
An Ethereum-based JPM Coin could increase institutional familiarity with public blockchain rails, potentially encouraging other banks to follow suit. It may also boost activity on Ethereum's network if transaction volumes from institutional settlement scale meaningfully over time.
For the broader digital asset industry, the move signals continued convergence between traditional banking infrastructure and blockchain technology. It does not, however, indicate a shift toward retail cryptocurrency products or speculative trading activity at JPMorgan.
The reported expansion reflects a cautious but notable step by a major bank toward integrating public blockchain infrastructure into institutional finance. Further details are expected as the rollout progresses.
