Overview:
‘Emily’ (2022), Emma Mackey's acclaimed Brontë biopic, left Netflix UK on October 22, 2025, after its licensing window closed.
The film never held a confirmed, lasting Netflix listing in the United States, since streaming rights vary heavily by region.
Viewers can still rent or buy ‘Emily’ digitally on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Google Play, or find it on DVD and Blu-ray.
Fans of literary dramas keep asking one simple question about Frances O'Connor's film ‘Emily.’ They want to know if this acclaimed Emily Brontë biopic still sits on Netflix. The film reimagines the author's short, restless life with a haunting visual style that critics still talk about. Anyone who enjoyed ‘Wuthering Heights’ or follows Emma Mackey's work naturally wants an easy place to watch it.
Streaming availability for smaller theatrical releases shifts more often than most people expect. ‘Emily’ fits that pattern closely, since it arrived with strong festival buzz but a short theatrical run. That combination pushed many viewers toward digital platforms soon after release. This piece lays out where the movie stands today and what actually happened to its Netflix listing.
What is Emily About
‘Emily’ is a 2022 British biographical drama and Frances O'Connor's directorial debut. It offers a partly fictionalized account of Emily Brontë's life, set before she wrote her only novel.
Emma Mackey plays Brontë, and the plot centers on an imagined romance with clergyman William Weightman. The supporting cast including Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Fionn Whitehead, Amelia Gething, Alexandra Dowling, Gemma Jones, and Adrian Dunbar brings real weight to the story.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022. It later opened in UK and US theaters to warm reviews from critics. ‘Emily’ currently holds an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a strong number for an independent period piece.
Several reviewers compared its gothic, moody tone to the Brontë sisters' writing style. Mackey's performance later earned her the BAFTA Rising Star award in 2023, raising the film's profile well after its original release.
Box Office and Critical Reception
‘Emily’ was never built or marketed as a blockbuster release. Bleecker Street handled its US distribution, while Warner Bros released it across the UK market. Box office numbers stayed modest, a common outcome for arthouse biopics without big studio backing. Even so, critical praise and awards attention kept the film in conversation long after it left theaters.

Is Emily Currently on Netflix
‘Emily’ joined Netflix in the United Kingdom roughly six months before it was pulled from the platform again. According to a report from New On Netflix UK, the film left Netflix UK on October 22, 2025. That exit came once its licensing agreement with the streamer ran out.
In practical terms, the movie no longer streams on Netflix anywhere in the UK right now. The United States tells a different story, since ‘Emily’ has not held a confirmed, lasting Netflix listing there at all. Streaming rights for one title often differ sharply from country to country. A film sitting on Netflix in one region says nothing about its status somewhere else.
Where to Watch Emily Now
Viewers hunting for ‘Emily’ today still have a few dependable routes:
Digital Rental or Purchase: Rent or buy the film through Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, or Google Play.
Physical Media: DVD and Blu-ray copies remain in stock at most major retailers.
Regional Streaming Checks: Availability on other subscription services can shift by country, so a quick local search helps before you commit.
With the Netflix window closed for now, renting or buying the film digitally remains the safest bet for most viewers.
Why Streaming Availability Keeps Changing
Licensing deals between studios and streaming platforms rarely last forever. Independent films like ‘Emily’ tend to move between services as contracts expire or shift toward rental-only models instead. This pattern shows up more with smaller studio releases, since major platforms usually favor titles locked into longer exclusive agreements.
Interest in a film like this often returns around anniversaries, award nominations, or whenever its cast lands a fresh high-profile project. Emma Mackey's growing career, including new major roles on the horizon, keeps pulling attention back toward her earlier work, ‘Emily’ included.
Final Words
‘Emily’ remains a well-reviewed, award-recognized film even without an active Netflix listing right now. Its exit from Netflix UK in October 2025 simply reflects how licensing windows work, nothing more. The film's Rotten Tomatoes score and Mackey's BAFTA win still draw new viewers toward it, no matter which platform happens to hold the rights.
For now, renting or buying the movie digitally gives you the most reliable path to watching it in full. Streaming listings can change again at any point, so a quick check before planning a watch night always pays off. Anyone drawn to literary dramas or gothic period pieces will likely find ‘Emily’ a genuinely rewarding watch, wherever it ends up streaming next.
