Greek police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was found shot in the head beside a motorbike in Glyfada, a southern suburb of Athens, early Sunday. Five bullet casings were recovered from the scene.
The body was discovered near the intersection of Karamanli and Panagouli streets on October 11, after a local resident alerted authorities to what appeared to be a traffic accident.
Officers arriving at the scene found the man lying on the ground beside the motorbike. A closer examination revealed a gunshot wound to the head.
The victim, whose identity had not been officially confirmed in the initial report, was believed to be between 50 and 60 years old.
According to Greek media reports, he was believed to have been associated with a Panathinaikos football supporters’ club and had worked as a nightclub bouncer.
He had reportedly been arrested in the past on suspicion of involvement in shootings and protection rackets. Reports also linked him to two shooting incidents involving other Panathinaikos supporters, alleged protection racket activity and a domestic violence case.
Police have not established whether any of these alleged connections were related to the killing.
Investigators are seeking surveillance footage from the surrounding area to establish the circumstances of the shooting and identify those responsible. The motive for the killing remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.
