With the connection of new wind farms to the transmission grid, the volume of electricity generated by wind farms in Latvia has reached an all-time high of 51 gigawatt-hours (GWh), according to the electricity market review prepared by electricity transmission operator “Augstsprieguma tīkls” (AST).
In September, the volume of electricity generated in Latvia and fed into the grid rose by 4 per cent compared with August, to 384 GWh, which was 16 per cent more than in September 2025. Electricity generation increased significantly at several types of power stations in September.
The volume of electricity generated by hydroelectric power stations also rose significantly – by 85 per cent to 149 GWh. The sharpest increase in percentage terms was recorded at natural gas power stations, where generation rose by 169 per cent to 12 GWh. The volume of electricity generated by biomass power stations rose by 21 per cent to 16 GWh. In contrast, output from solar power stations fell by 37 per cent to 140 GWh due to seasonal conditions; however, this was still 67 per cent higher than a year ago. Output from biogas power stations remained virtually unchanged, falling by 1 per cent to 7 GWh, according to AST.
Electricity consumption in Latvia in September rose by 2.0 per cent compared with August, to 616 GWh, whilst it was 9.1 per cent higher than in the corresponding period last year. Domestic electricity generation accounted for 62.39 per cent of the country’s total electricity consumption, which was 1.4 percentage points higher than in August, said AST.
In September, total electricity consumption in the Baltic states rose by 3 per cent, reaching 2,187 GWh.
