The Bermuda Basketball Association is relaunching its women’s basketball league, welcoming female players of all skill levels from middle school age and up.
A spokesperson said, “Bermuda is relaunching a women’s basketball league, and registration is open to every female player on the island, whatever experience or skill level. For too long, women’s basketball in Bermuda has existed in bursts.
“That is changing now. The Bermuda Basketball Association is re-establishing a women’s league. It will feature at least four teams playing full court 5v5 format , and it will become the main pathway into every future national squad.
“The league’s purpose is continuity. It gives players competitive basketball at home across a whole season, not just in the weeks before an international tournament. It gives coaches something to develop, officials somewhere to qualify, and supporters a team to follow. And it gives a girl leaving school basketball somewhere to go next. It is important to acknowledge individuals such as Coach Reed have done an excellent job in keeping players engaged through the Hurricanes program at www.teamhurricanehoops.com and @Coachbda [Instagram].
“Registration is now open to all female players regardless of experience or skill level. You do not need to arrive as the finished player. Bring your energy, your commitment, and a willingness to learn.
“Visit www.bermudabasketball.com or follow @Bermudawomensbasketball Instagram for details. We’re inviting all skill levels, middle school age and up to join us. Returning national players, experienced club athletes and complete newcomers are all encouraged to attend.
“Talented Bermudian women and girls have had too few places to play, develop, and be seen. Some have gone overseas. Some have played in men’s or mixed environments. Others have simply stepped away from a sport they loved.
“This relaunch is about changing that, together. It is about giving a young girl a path from her first schoolyard basket to a national jersey. It is about welcoming former players home, building friendships and confidence, and developing the coaches, officials and volunteers who will carry the game forward.
“The BBA Women’s League encourages Bermuda’s schools, Heads of Athletics, PE teachers and coaches to get in touch to explore how we can work together to support school teams and create more opportunities for young female athletes. A proposed school ambassador program would bring together schools, student-athletes and their parents, and the league to strengthen the connection between school and community basketball, helping more girls develop their skills, build confidence and stay involved in the game. We encourage the schools to reach out to Leah Mosquera to discuss further at bermudayouthbasketball@gmail.com.
“Most of all, it is about showing women and girls across Bermuda that the court belongs to them too. A league needs a summit, and ours is international competition. The goal is the 2027 Island Games in the Faroe Islands, from 3 to 9 July 2027, where basketball returns to the program.
“Bermuda has a proud Island Games basketball history, including three men’s gold medals and victory on home soil in 2013. Bermuda’s women have competed at the Games before, too. The 2027 campaign is our chance to re-establish that presence and give a new generation their own story to write.
Jaime Cedenio, Director of Women’s Basketball, Bermuda Basketball Association, said, “Watching the women’s program go quiet meant watching opportunities disappear, and we knew it was time to change that. A league is how we make sure it never goes quiet again. This relaunch belongs to every woman or girl who has ever wanted a place on the court, and to every person who wants to help her get there. Join the league, bring a friend, and let us build something Bermuda can be proud of. Our main focus is on establishing a women’s league but we also have our eyes are on the Faroe Islands in 2027 , but the real victory will be a program that is still here inspiring girls long afterward.”
Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport Owen Darrell said, “Congratulations to the Bermuda Basketball Association for re- establishing a women’s league to complement their existing programs. Around the world, Women’s Professional Leagues are some of the fastest growing amongst multiple sports. As the father of a 15-year-old daughter who loves to watch the WNBA, I know firsthand that this re-establishment of a women’s league locally will be very popular. I wish Director Jamie Cedendi and his team much success.”
Joshua Nesbitt, Vice President of Bermuda Basketball Association, said, “I couldn’t be more excited about the direction women’s basketball is heading in Bermuda. Bringing Jaime Cedenio on as Women’s Director was something we felt was needed, and he has embraced the responsibility by surrounding himself with a team that is passionate, energetic and ready to make a real difference.
“As an Association, we want our women and young girls to know that basketball is for them too. They deserve the same opportunities to develop, compete, travel and represent Bermuda as our male players. This restart is about more than getting women back on the court. It is about creating a pathway and building something that our young girls can aspire to be part of for years to come.”
