The Abuja Property Development Company (APDC) has commissioned housing units at Hilltop Residence, Usman, and unveiled new projects in Karsana District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of efforts to expand access to affordable housing.
The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, represented by the Group Managing Director of Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL), Ambassador Maureen Tamuno, said the projects were designed to meet residents’ housing needs, particularly those of young people and low- and middle-income earners.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Abuja on Thursday, Wike said the completed units comprised studio apartments and self-contained one-bedroom apartments with kitchens and toilets.
He said the development would give young people and school leavers an opportunity to own homes and establish themselves in the capital.
The minister disclosed that each studio apartment was sold for N15 million, describing the price as reasonable given the difficulties many residents face in securing affordable accommodation in Abuja.
“President Bola Tinubu has decided to take care of different cadres of people, especially the young persons.
“You can see that young people and school leavers will be able to afford even to live in this type of apartment to start life in Abuja,” he said.
Wike said the initiative demonstrated the commitment of government-owned companies to identifying residents’ needs and developing appropriate housing solutions.
He added that the apartments had sold out within a short period, reflecting the demand for affordable housing and the need for additional units.
“Once you have accommodation, especially in a city like Abuja, you have solved one of the major problems facing residents,” he said.
He urged APDC to sustain its efforts to provide affordable homes and commended its management for developing housing options suited to different income groups.
The Acting Managing Director of APDC, Akeem Aderogbe, said the company was committed to providing housing options that matched Nigerians’ financial capacities and household needs.
He said its offerings included studio apartments, one-bedroom units and two-bedroom flats, allowing residents to move into larger homes as their families grew and their financial circumstances improved.
Aderogbe urged young workers and civil servants to explore available mortgage schemes to facilitate homeownership.
He said prospective homeowners could pay an initial deposit of about 10 per cent, with the balance financed through relevant housing finance institutions, subject to eligibility.
He identified the National Housing Fund, the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board and other mortgage schemes as potential financing options.
According to him, younger workers could spread loan repayments over their remaining years in service, making it easier to plan for homeownership.
He advised civil servants not to postpone plans to acquire property until they were approaching retirement, urging them to take advantage of available financing arrangements early in their careers.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of Bashmoh Homes Limited, Alhaji Bashir Jimoh, said addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit required complementary measures beyond the construction of residential buildings.
He urged the government to facilitate access to land titles and provide essential infrastructure to support housing developments.
Jimoh said proper land documentation was critical to enabling prospective homeowners to obtain mortgage facilities from banks and other financial institutions.
He noted that many Nigerians struggled to secure housing loans without the necessary property documents.
The developer also stressed the need for access roads to housing estates, saying adequate road networks would improve accessibility and make new residential developments more attractive to prospective occupants.
He said improved land administration, access to housing finance and the provision of basic infrastructure were essential to making homes more affordable and addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit.
