Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, October 15, inaugurated a vertical green wall beneath Bhagadatta Flyover-1 in Dispur, marking a step towards expanding urban greenery and improving the city’s environment.
The project is being implemented by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). With a total allocation of Rs 34.82 crore, the initiative aims to install vertical green walls at 20 locations beneath flyovers across Guwahati.
The green wall beneath Bhagadatta Flyover-1 is part of the wider initiative to introduce greenery into urban spaces where conventional plantation may be difficult due to limited land availability. The project seeks to make use of areas beneath flyovers, which often remain underutilised, by incorporating green installations into the city’s infrastructure.
The initiative is also intended to support Guwahati’s efforts to improve its urban environment amid growing concerns over air quality, pollution and the availability of green spaces in rapidly developing areas.
Under the programme, vertical green walls are planned at multiple flyover locations across the city. The project is expected to contribute to the development of a greener urban landscape while complementing other measures aimed at improving environmental conditions.
The project places a focus on integrating greenery into existing public infrastructure rather than relying solely on conventional parks and roadside plantations.
The inauguration of the first installation marks the beginning of a broader plan to introduce similar green walls at the remaining identified locations. The GMC is implementing the initiative as part of the city’s activities under the National Clean Air Programme.
The project is expected to add a new dimension to Guwahati’s urban development efforts, with its wider impact depending on the implementation and maintenance of the green walls across the proposed 20 locations.
