Priddy Ugly is stepping back from the spotlight to talk about something far more personal than music. In a candid reflection, the South African rapper has opened up about fatherhood, emotional vulnerability and what he truly wants people to remember him for.
At the heart of his message is his one-year-old son, whose needs are refreshingly simple.
"He just loves his paps being around," the rapper shared.
That kind of unconditional presence, he says, has quietly shifted how he measures his own achievements. His daughter has reinforced that lesson in a more direct way.
"My daughter doesn't remember how many awards and prizes she's won," he said, "but she remembers every time I wasn't at that practice or prize-giving."
The weight of those words has clearly stayed with him.
The values Priddy Ugly wants to pass on
Beyond showing up physically, the rapper is equally focused on the lessons his children will carry into adulthood. He wants them to shake off a bad result, whether it's a lost football match or any other setback, without letting it define their mood or self-worth. Love, kindness, respect and gratitude sit at the core of what he hopes to instil, along with the ability not to take themselves too seriously.
His views on masculinity challenge the idea that strength means staying silent. He believes men should feel free to admit when they're struggling and take time to heal. Walking away from a confrontation, he argues, often demands more courage than engaging in one.
The rapper has also drawn a firm line between his public persona and his private self.
"Priddy Ugly is the narrator of Ricardo's life," he explained, adding that his stage name functions as "a personified journal of the man, but not the man himself."
That separation helps him absorb criticism of his work without reading it as an attack on his character.
How fatherhood changed his music
Becoming a father and gaining a wider audience have together influenced how Priddy Ugly writes. He admits he never set out to be a role model when he started rapping, but awareness of who is listening has changed his creative choices. He has since dropped profanity from his lyrics, opting instead to find other ways to express complex ideas.
He is particularly careful about how artists frame painful experiences. "There's a very thin line" between expressing trauma and glorifying it, he warned, and he takes that responsibility seriously.
His partnership with dancer and choreographer Bontle Modiselle has also shaped his thinking. Together, the couple has embraced sacrifice and mutual support.
"We've learnt selflessness in its truest form," he said.
As for success, Priddy Ugly measures it by what greets him at the front door.
"How happy my family is to see me when I get home," he said.
On legacy, his outlook is equally grounded:
"Legacy is in what people feel and say about you once you leave the room."
