A suburban street in Langa became the scene of a tragic daylight attack on Monday evening, leaving two young men dead and a third wounded in what local community leaders describe as a targeted ambush.
The violent incident unfolded on Teenage Vuso Street in Zone 5, Langa, as residents were returning home from work.
According to eyewitnesses and authorities, three men were sitting inside a parked vehicle when unknown gunmen opened fire.
Police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered the bodies of two men, aged 20 and 25, inside the vehicle. Both victims had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to their upper bodies and were declared dead at the scene.
A third occupant of the vehicle sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment.
Police have registered two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. No arrests have been made, and the motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
The shooting - occurring before dark in full view of bystanders and children - has sent shockwaves through the Zone 5 community.
Langa community leader Nomalungelo Bikitsha expressed deep outrage over the nature of the crime, suggesting the hit was carefully planned.
“The incident happened around the time people were coming home from work. It was not even dark, yet people were shot in broad daylight in front of children and other members of the public,” Bikitsha said.
“We do not know what could have caused the shooting, but we will gather more information. The perpetrators knew exactly what they were doing and who they were looking for.”
Bikitsha noted that while crime is a persistent challenge in the township, the nature of Monday’s attack shocked even seasoned community members.
In response, local leadership is pledging to step up safety measures alongside law enforcement.
“We will work to strengthen security in the area by ensuring that Community Police Forum (CPF) members and police officers maintain a visible presence,” she added, acknowledging that local safety structures continue to operate under severe resource constraints.
Police are urging anyone with information regarding the suspects or the events leading up to the attack to contact the Langa Police Station or Crime Stop anonymously hotline at 08600 10111.
