Police say the suspects were picked up during an intelligence-led nighttime operation in Budibaga Trading Centre after residents reported rising cases of burglary, theft, animal theft and suspected drug abuse.
Police in Mubende District have arrested 38 suspects during an intelligence-led security operation in Budibaga Trading Centre, Kalonga Sub-county, following complaints from residents about rising criminal activity.
The suspects were arrested during a nighttime operation that began on Sunday, October 18, 2026, and ended at about 3am on Monday.
Wamala Region Police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi said the operation followed reports of house break-ins, animal theft, mugging, snatching and opium abuse in the area.
“The operation was conducted following concerns raised by members of the public about the increasing cases of crime in Budibaga Trading Centre,” Kigozi said.
He said security agencies had gathered intelligence and profiled the area before launching the operation to identify and apprehend people suspected of involvement in criminal activities.
Police recovered suspected burglary implements and opium from some of the suspects during the operation.
The suspects are undergoing screening at Mubende Central Police Station as investigators establish whether they are linked to the reported offences.
Kigozi said police would process case files for suspects against whom sufficient evidence is found and submit them to the State Attorney for consideration of prosecution.
“Screening is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding each suspect's arrest. Those found with a connection to criminal activities will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” he said.
The operation is part of ongoing security efforts to address crime in Budibaga and the wider Mubende District. Residents have raised concerns about theft and burglary, offences that threaten household property, livestock and livelihoods.
Kigozi said security agencies remained committed to improving public safety and enabling residents to carry out their daily activities without fear of criminal attacks.
Screening of the 38 suspects and investigations into the reported offences are ongoing.
