Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, says the first phase of the Creek Road Market reconstruction in Old Port Harcourt Township will provide about 700 shops for traders, ease traffic congestion and improve trading conditions.
Fubara gave the assurance during an inspection of the ongoing project, expressing satisfaction with the quality and progress of work.
He said the market would accommodate traders selling wet and dry goods, particularly women currently operating along Creek Road and adjoining streets, allowing the surrounding roads to be rehabilitated and easing movement in the area.
“With 700 shops, it is clear that our women that are trading along the Creek Road will be relocated, and we’ll have freer access along the road,” the governor said.
Fubara described Old Port Harcourt Township as a historic part of the city and home to elderly residents and the original inhabitants, whom he referred to as the “Aborigines”.
He said the area needed to regain its cleanliness and dignity, noting that street trading had spread beyond Creek Road to other roads in the township.
“It’s important we tidy up this road so that these traders can evacuate the major road, and the road will be free,” he said.
The governor assured that his administration would provide the necessary support to ensure the project’s timely completion. He added that the contractor had promised to deliver the project by the end of January 2027.
The reconstruction is part of the Fubara administration’s urban renewal efforts aimed at improving commercial activities, easing traffic movement and creating a cleaner environment in Port Harcourt.
