Nearly $1 million in sports, other trading cards were stolen from a FedEx truck in California, police told NBC News on Monday.
Two pallets of cards were taken and a third pallet was "disrupted" while reportedly on their return journey after being graded by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) — a card authentication and grading service.
The two full pallets of cards stolen were estimated to have a value of $963,000, per The Athletic. It's unclear how much was lost from the third pallet, where only half the packages were taken.
The theft occurred on Oct. 13 while the driver of the FedEx truck reportedly left the vehicle unattended for between 60-90 minutes. The lock on the truck was broken and the packages were stolen when the driver returned to the vehicle.
After multiple card hunters spoke out about their losses, PSA said it would compensate customers for the stolen items, per The Athletic.
PSA said impacted customers have been contacted and the company is arranging compensation for the stolen items. Compensation for stolen cards is paid out based on "fair market value" up to the maximum insured value for each item selected by the customer prior to grading. Trading cards that receive a high grade from PSA can be worth many times more than ungraded cards.
Additionally, grading fees paid out by those looking to have their cards graded would be refunded, per NBC News.
In a statement, FedEx said the security of shipments is "a top priority." The company added it was working with law enforcement in their investigation.
One individual reportedly affected by the theft compiled a list of 382 cards of theirs that were reportedly stolen. That list includes two Michael Jordan cards, two LeBron James cards and 15 Shai Gilgeous-Alexander cards, among many others. It wasn't just sports cards that were stolen in the theft. The list also includes cards from the Dragon Ball Super card game, One Piece card game and assorted Marvel cards. Pokémon cards were also reported to be stolen as part of the heist.
