The Ghana National Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas) has engaged media practitioners from the Western and Greater Accra project affected Regions to deepen their understanding of the company’s operations, with emphasis on health, safety, environmental protection and sustainable development.
The engagement, organised through the company’s Corporate Affairs and Community Relations Office, was held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Alisa Hotel in Accra.
The session provided journalists with insights into Ghana Gas’s operational activities and measures to safeguard surrounding communities, monitor emissions, restore vegetation and minimise the environmental impact of its operations.
Speaking on the company’s sustainability initiatives, the Principal Manager for Health, Safety and Environment, Jaasu Yahaya, outlined interventions aimed at strengthening community safety, improving environmental performance and promoting responsible management of the company’s operational areas.
He said Ghana Gas had established emergency preparedness measures for communities within its operational zones, including evacuation plans and designated routes to facilitate the safe movement of residents in the event of an emergency.
According to him, the company works closely with its Community Relations and Security teams to monitor activities along pipeline corridors and maintain engagement with communities within its project areas.
Mr. Yahaya added that the company also undertakes health-related engagements in communities near its facilities to identify potential concerns and assess circumstances that could affect residents’ well-being.
On environmental sustainability, Mr. Yahaya highlighted the company’s tree-planting and vegetation restoration programmes, which are intended to improve environmental conditions and support long-term ecological sustainability.
He disclosed that Ghana Gas had planted approximately 914,000 trees during previous phases of its restoration programme, recording a survival rate of about 75 per cent.
He said trees planted during the current reporting period were achieving a survival rate of approximately 95 per cent, reflecting improved outcomes in the company’s restoration efforts.
According to him, the company is also extending vegetation restoration activities around its facilities and operational boundaries to identify areas requiring further intervention.
The initiatives form part of Ghana Gas’s broader efforts to promote environmental responsibility and ensure that its operations are managed in a manner that supports the well-being of surrounding communities.
Mr. Yahaya further disclosed that Ghana Gas was enhancing its emissions-monitoring systems to improve the detection and management of gas releases from its operations.
He explained that the company was improving material-balance monitoring to obtain a clearer understanding of the volume and nature of gas moving through its systems.
The company is also exploring the deployment of additional sensors at strategic locations within its plant to detect potential leaks and strengthen its response to emissions-related incidents.
He said the measures were expected to improve the company’s capacity to identify gas releases, respond promptly to potential leaks and enhance its overall environmental performance.
Mr. Yahaya also highlighted ongoing collaboration among relevant operational and management teams to explore the commercialisation of components of gas currently being flared.
The initiative is intended to reduce gas flaring and minimise its associated environmental impact while supporting more efficient utilisation of available resources.
He said the interventions demonstrated the company’s commitment to improving operational efficiency while reducing the environmental footprint of its activities.
The Head of Corporate Communications at Ghana Gas, Richard Ernest Kirk-Mensah, expressed satisfaction with the engagement, describing it as an important opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the company and the media.
He said sustained engagement with journalists would broaden their understanding of Ghana Gas’s operations and initiatives, enabling them to report more accurately and comprehensively on the company’s activities.
Mr. Kirk-Mensah emphasised the importance of equipping media practitioners with relevant information to support informed public discourse on the company’s role in Ghana’s energy sector.
The engagement forms part of Ghana Gas’s stakeholder relations efforts to promote transparency, strengthen public understanding of its operations and improve communication with key stakeholders.
Through continued collaboration with the media, the company seeks to provide accurate information on its operational activities, environmental responsibilities and community-focused interventions, while highlighting its contribution to Ghana’s energy security and sustainable development.
