Charles Matovu, a former opposition MP, died aged 41 on 22 October. The cause of death has not been stated.
This Charles Matovu Busiro South MP biography covers a former Ugandan lawmaker who died aged 41 on Thursday, 22 October 2026. Officials of his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), announced the death.
NUP is an opposition party led by Robert Kyagulanyi, who is known as Bobi Wine. Matovu’s death leaves a court case about Uganda’s January 2026 election without its main claimant.
Charles Matovu Busiro South MP Biography in Brief
Matovu was born on 1 April 1985 and worked as an electrical engineer, Nile Post reports, citing his Parliament profile. He represented Busiro South, in Wakiso District, on the NUP ticket in Uganda’s 11th Parliament.
PML Daily and UG Standard say he won the seat in the 2021 general election. Kyagulanyi announced his death on X on Thursday evening, UG Standard reports.
The January 2026 Election and the Court Petition
Matovu sought re-election on Thursday, 15 January 2026, and lost to Kenan Opio of the National Resistance Movement (NRM). The NRM is the party of President Yoweri Museveni.
Court records cited by Nile Post show Opio with 36,497 votes and Matovu with 30,487. That is a gap of 6,010 votes.
Matovu challenged the result at the High Court in Entebbe, alleging irregularities. UG Standard says the petition also claimed that the Electoral Commission and the army helped Opio win.
Opio’s lawyers, led by Andrew Kilyowa, contested the petition, UG Standard reports. None of the allegations had been tested in a final judgment when Matovu died.
On Friday, 25 September, the High Court dismissed his application for extra electoral materials for 102 polling stations, UG Standard says. The court found the documents were not identified precisely enough, and some results forms had already been supplied.
In December 2025, NUP said Matovu and campaign members were assaulted by men alleged to be in uniform, Nile Post reports. The party said those affected were treated at Mengo Hospital, and that report carries no response from the authorities.
After the death, Kyagulanyi said Matovu had been robbed of victory “at gunpoint” in January, UG Standard reports. That is his claim, and the court had not ruled on the petition.
What the Party Has Said About His Final Days
NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya said the family reported an “abrupt health complication” on Monday, 19 October. UG Standard and PML Daily carry his account.
Rubongoya visited Matovu at Lubaga Hospital on Thursday and found him critically ill, unable to speak or open his eyes. Matovu was then moved to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he died.
No cause of death has been stated by the family, a hospital or officials in the reports read. PML Daily says it was not officially established; Gateway News UG says no public statement came by Thursday evening.
Kyagulanyi expressed shock and paid tribute to Matovu as a brother, comrade and fellow leader. Gateway News UG adds that Joel Ssenyonyi, whom it names as Leader of the Opposition, and other party officials also mourned him.
