Forget capes, flashy superpowers and another superhero saving the world. With Clayface, DC Studios is stepping into much darker territory, where the real horror comes from watching a man lose control of his own body.
Directed by James Watkins, the film follows Matt Hagen, a Hollywood actor whose desperate attempt to restore his disfigured face leads to a transformation he could never have imagined.
Starring Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie and Max Minghella, Clayface promises a disturbing mix of body horror, psychological drama and tragedy.
A Man Desperate to Get His Life Back
Matt Hagen is an actor whose life takes a devastating turn after his face is disfigured. With his career and identity slipping away, he turns to Dr Caitlyn Corr, played by Naomi Ackie, hoping her experimental treatment will help him return to normal.
At first, the treatment seems like a way out. But things quickly take a horrifying turn as Hagen’s body begins to change in ways he cannot control.
What makes this premise interesting is that Hagen’s story is not simply about becoming a monster. It is about a man who cannot accept what he has lost. His desperation to look like his old self becomes his undoing, making the horror feel personal rather than just another excuse for gruesome visuals.
Tom Rhys Harries Brings the Tragedy to Life
Tom Rhys Harries is faced with an especially difficult task. It takes more than simply putting on a face of horror to play a character who is losing both his looks and sense of identity.
Hagen must come across as a believable human being whose fear and desperation we can all relate to despite his growing terrifying nature.
Naomi Ackie’s Dr Corr is equally important to the story. Her involvement in the experimental treatment puts science at the center of Hagen’s transformation, raising questions about how far people should go to fix something they believe is broken.
The supporting cast, which includes David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, adds further weight to the film’s dark world.
Body Horror Instead of Superhero Spectacle
The biggest selling point of Clayface is its willingness to get uncomfortable. There is much room for grotesque imagery in the notion of a human body becoming deformed, and the film seems eager to make use of this potentiality.
Instead of depicting the ability to assume new shapes as a neat superpower, the narrative presents it as a terrifying experience. Such a technique reminds one of body-horror masterpieces like The Fly, in which physical transformation becomes the source of horror and tragedy.
It is refreshing for a viewer tired of the conventional formula of superhero genre films to see something different. At the same time, a viewer who seeks spectacular action scenes or comic relief typical for most comic-book movies will probably be disappointed.
Does DC’s Experiment Work?
The premise gives Clayface a chance to stand apart from other comic-book adaptations. Its focus on appearance, identity and the fear of losing oneself offers more emotional depth than a straightforward battle between a hero and a villain.
The trick is not having the disturbing images take over the storytelling process. The body horror may make viewers uncomfortable, but it is the emotional growth of the character that will decide whether it leaves an impression.
With James Watkins at the helm, the film will have the chance of making a rather obscure Batman villain the subject of a disturbing tragedy.

Final Verdict
Clayface is an intriguing change of direction for DC Studios. Instead of relying on spectacle, it explores the frightening consequences of desperation and the desire to reclaim a life that may already be gone.
It is an element of body horror which makes this movie stand out, as well as the story of Matt Hagen whose fate can be both tragic and horrifying.
On the one hand, the plot idea looks very appealing, yet on the other hand, everything will depend on how successfully the director combines the horror and drama elements of the film. It is expected to hit theaters on October 23, 2026.
