PETALING JAYA: Taking the dog for a walk? Don't forget the leash, a bag for the poop - and, apparently, a bottle of water for the pee.
That's the unusual message from Vienna, Austria, where dog owners in one neighbourhood are being encouraged to rinse away their pets' urine to protect trees and other greenery.
The initiative, called "Schönes Gassi", or "nice dog walk", was launched on Oct 12 in Neubau, a densely populated district of the Austrian capital. The voluntary campaign encourages owners to carry small bottles of tap water and pour some over areas where their dogs have urinated.
According to The Guardian, the district is even distributing free 270ml bottles to encourage participation. It's a simple idea that might raise a few eyebrows, but there's a serious reason behind it.
Neubau is home to around 600 dogs, many of which regularly use the same trees and patches of greenery to relieve themselves. While marking territory is perfectly natural canine behaviour, repeated exposure to urine can damage urban trees.
According to the campaign's organisers, chemicals in dog urine can harm tree bark, weakening its protective layer and potentially allowing fungi and other pathogens to enter. Over time, this can lead to decay and compromise a tree's stability.
That's particularly concerning in neighbourhoods where trees provide much-needed shade and help cool surrounding streets. Neubau has planted around 200 trees over the past decade, making their protection an important local priority.
Fortunately, fresh dog urine is highly water-soluble, so rinsing the affected area helps dilute substances that could cause damage or unpleasant odours. Of course, the water bottle isn't a free pass for Fido to pee wherever he pleases, and owners are still encouraged to steer their pets away from vulnerable greenery.
A little consideration goes a long way
Rather than introducing restrictions or penalties, the organisers hope to encourage small changes in behaviour that make shared urban spaces more pleasant for everyone.
Dog trainer Conny Sporrer, who supports the initiative, told reporters that pets can be taught where they should relieve themselves.
"We need neither a city full of dog bans nor a city where dogs can simply pee anywhere," she said, emphasising the importance of consideration, education and suitable facilities.
Similar practices have been adopted in parts of Japan, Spain, Italy and Switzerland, suggesting the idea isn't quite as unusual as it first sounds. Nevertheless, some Vienna dog owners have bemoaned having to carry another item while out on a daily walk.
For now, participation remains entirely voluntary.
Could it work in Malaysia?
The idea might also strike a chord with Malaysian dog owners and their neighbours, given the occasional disputes over pets urinating on pavement flowerbeds, outside residential gates or around the roots of carefully tended trees.
For residents who take pride in their gardens, repeatedly finding that a passing dog has left its mark can understandably be frustrating. Encouraging owners to carry a small water bottle could help reduce unpleasant smells while showing consideration for others.
Naturally, prevention is preferable to rinsing afterwards, and keeping dogs away from neighbours' plants should remain the priority. But perhaps there's something worth borrowing from Vienna's approach: responsible pet ownership needn't always involve complicated rules or expensive solutions.
Sometimes, a little water and a little thoughtfulness might be all it takes to make neighbourhood life more harmonious.
