Agartala, October 16: The Fisheries Department will sell around 10,170 kg of fish at affordable prices across Tripura on October 21 on the occasion of Bijoya Dashami, with supplies increased this year in view of rising demand.
Announcing the initiative at a press conference at the Secretariat on Friday, S. Prabhu, Special Secretary of the Fisheries Department, said fish would be sold through 23 designated centres across various districts of the state.
He said popular varieties, including Catla, Rohu, Mrigal and Silver Carp, would be available at government fish farms, breeding farms, fish seed production centres and the offices of the Fisheries Department’s Superintendents. The sales will cover locations such as Kanchanpur, Panisagar, Dharmanagar, Kumarghat, Kamalpur, Khowai, Teliamura, Jirania, Sonamura, Udaipur, Amarpur, Santirbazar and Sakram.
The department has significantly increased the quantity of fish earmarked for sale compared to last year. According to Prabhu, around 5,400 kg of fish were sold during Bijoya Dashami last year. Considering the higher demand expected this year, the supply has been raised to approximately 10,170 kg.
A special counter will also be operated by the Tripura Apex Fishery Cooperative Society at Maharajganj market, where different varieties of fish, including Hilsa, will be available from the morning of October 21. Around 1,700 kg of fish has been allocated for sale through the cooperative society’s counters.
Prabhu said prices would vary according to the species and weight of the fish. The initiative aims to ensure adequate availability of fish at affordable rates during the festive occasion, when demand traditionally increases.
Santosh Das, Director of the Fisheries Department, was also present at the press conference.
