SEC action brings Texas and Florida back together for what the Longhorns and Arch Manning hope will be a shot at revenge. Coming off a loss, Texas is eager to get back in the conference title picture with a good showing against the reeling Gators.
Here’s what you need to know heading into the matchup as The Big Lead locks in our final prediction for this Week 7 college football clash.
Texas offensive inconsistency and defensive strength
Arch Manning has shown flashes but has been uneven against better competition, with turnovers becoming a recurring issue. Pass protection has been mixed despite solid grades in some metrics, and the run game has lacked consistent explosiveness.
Where Texas separates itself is on defense. The unit ranks among the better groups nationally in yards allowed and has been especially effective limiting yards after contact.
Rushing off the edges and overall tackling efficiency have been strengths. That could create some real problems for a Florida offense that has looked worn down.
Defensive collapse, run game issues at Florida
Even during the Gators’ win streak, critics sounded the alarm about this defense. The two-game skid has confirmed those worries. Missed tackles and coverage breakdowns have piled up?
The total damage? Florida is the SEC’s worst defense in total output, explosive plays allowed, and against the pass. It’s the second-worst in scoring.
On offense, the Florida run game that once looked dominant has been largely shut down by better fronts. Jadan Baugh’s production has dropped sharply. After rushing for over 130 yards in four wins, his totals fell to 13 and then 59 yards in two losses.
Questions also linger about quarterback availability with Aaron Philo listed as questionable. A potential shift to Tramell Jones Jr. would add even more uncertainty against a Texas defense that flies to the ball.
Key matchup dynamics to watch
Texas holds clear edges in defensive structure and home-field stability. Florida’s ability to create explosive plays through play-action and yards after catch remains a theoretical strength, but recent film shows those opportunities drying up against disciplined units.
Scheme-wise, Texas’ ability to limit perimeter runs and finish tackles aligns poorly with what Florida has relied on. Manning should face less pressure than he did against Oklahoma, giving him cleaner looks against a secondary that has been vulnerable.
Florida vs. Texas prediction: Who wins and why?
Texas is the more complete team right now, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Even with offensive questions, the Longhorns’ ability to control the line of scrimmage and force Florida into obvious passing situations should decide the game.
Florida has the talent to keep stretches competitive, but the recent defensive regression and limited run game make a full road upset unlikely.
