AISI is the government’s technical body with the job of testing and researching advanced and frontier AI capabilities to protect Australians from systemic harm.
The Australian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, announced during National AI Week, has $29 million allocated to it, with funding derived from the National AI Plan. The institute will soon be operational and will provide continuous testing capabilities, publish research reports, and issue evidence-based policy advice to Parliament.
The institute operates as a specialised division within the Department of Industry, Science and Resources and falls under the ministerial portfolios of Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science, Tim Ayres, and that of Dr Andrew Charlton, who is assistant minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy.
