BAGAMOYO: TANZANIA is stepping up efforts to strengthen local manufacturing and increase domestic participation in the mining value chain following the inauguration of a wire mesh manufacturing plant operated by Geofields Tanzania Limited in Kerege, Bagamoyo, Coast Region.
The plant was inaugurated on October 17, 2026, by the Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, and has an annual production capacity of 100,000 pieces of wire mesh to support mining operations in Tanzania.

The investment is expected to support local production of materials required by the mining industry, create employment opportunities and promote the development of domestic industrial expertise.
The initiative forms part of efforts to expand Tanzania’s role in the mining sector beyond mineral extraction to include the manufacturing of products and equipment used in mining operations.

The government is also promoting greater participation of Tanzanian companies in the mining value chain through local procurement, strategic partnerships and capacity building.
During the inauguration, Mavunde directed the Mining Commission, the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) and the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to inspect joint-venture companies providing services to mining firms to ensure they comply with registration requirements and applicable regulations.
He also challenged Tanzanian businesses to pool financial resources, strengthen partnerships and establish competitive enterprises capable of accessing procurement opportunities in the mining sector.
According to the minister, procurement opportunities associated with the sector involve approximately 5.1tri/- , with the minister citing a figure of no more than six companies in connection with the amount.
Geofields Tanzania Limited, which also has a presence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is seeking to expand its reach in the African market, creating potential opportunities for regional trade in mining supplies.

The establishment of the plant reflects efforts to build domestic industrial capacity, facilitate technology transfer and increase the share of mining-related expenditure retained within the country.
The government’s broader ambition is to position Tanzania as a regional hub for the manufacture and supply of mining equipment and materials, in line with ongoing efforts to strengthen local industries and increase Tanzanians’ participation in the exploitation of the country’s mineral resources.
