Parents across the country have been urged to take greater responsibility for the welfare of their children, particularly by ensuring that they provide them with meals at school, instead of leaving the responsibility entirely to government.
The call was made by the Chaplain of St. Augustine College Wakiso, Fr. Lawrence Mbabaali, during a sports day held at Angels of Hope Education Centre in Kawuku.
The sports day gave learners an opportunity to showcase their talents in different activities, including athletics, jumping and other games.
“Parents should understand that taking care of their children is a shared responsibility. They should not always expect government to provide everything, including meals at school.”
Fr. Mbabaali said many parents are increasingly reluctant to provide meals for their children at school, with some insisting that schools should provide food for free.
He said the situation is affecting the education and welfare of learners, especially when parents refuse to contribute towards school requirements.
“Many parents want everything to be free, claiming that government stopped them from paying money to schools. But parents must understand that they also have a responsibility to support their children's education and wellbeing.”
Fr. Mbabaali also cautioned parents against allowing their children unrestricted access to social media, warning that they could be exposed to harmful content and negative influences.
“Parents should guide their children on how to use social media responsibly and protect them from content and influences that may negatively affect their lives.”
Meanwhile, the school Director , Fred Kalungi Kabuye, called upon parents to support their children in developing their talents, saying this could help keep them away from harmful activities, including drug abuse.
“Parents should identify and support the talents of their children. When children are given opportunities to develop their abilities, they can use their time productively and avoid engaging in harmful activities.”
The school's headteacher, Henry Ssempewo thanked parents for their continued support towards the school and its activities.
“We appreciate the parents for the support they have continued to give us. Their involvement is important in helping us develop our learners both academically and through extracurricular activities.”»
The learners competed in three houses — Flamingo, Doves and Cranes.
At the end of the competitions, Flamingo emerged victorious, followed by Cranes, while Doves finished third.
Flamingo House was awarded a trophy and a goat as part of the prizes.
Students and supporters celebrate loudly as the Flamingo team receives the trophy, with cheers and applause filling the school grounds.
The celebrations brought the sports day to a joyful conclusion as learners, teachers and parents joined in celebrating the students' talents and achievements.
