IMPHAL, Oct 21: At least six protesters sustained minor injuries in police action this afternoon near Rising Athletic Union (RAU) ground when they tried to storm Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium.
A large group of bandh supporters from Telipati side crossed the hanging bridge built over the Imphal River and marched towards Khuman Lampak Sport complex through the southern gate.
They were protesting against the organisation of the 1st State-level Poomsae Taekwondo Championship 2026 by the Youth Affairs and Sports Department, Government of Manipur in the midst of the incessant killings and widespread unrest prevailing in the State.
Notably, the championship was attended by Chief Minister Yumnam Khem-chand as the chief guest.
The protest march and the police crackdown took place when he was present at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium.
Heated arguments broke out between the bandh supporters/protesters and security personnel, and the situation turned ugly when the security personnel tried to pull up one of the male protesters.
In order to bring the situation under control, security personnel fired tear gas shells and mock bombs and pushed back the protesters up to Telipati.
In the police action, three individuals sustained minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.
Soon after, another group of protesters/bandh supporters marched toward Khuman Lampak from the Lamlong side but they were stopped by security personnel from proceeding towards Khuman Lampak.
In their effort to stop the protesters, security personnel again fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs.
In the crackdown, three other individuals sustained minor injuries and one of them fell into the roadside drain.
The injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital in a police vehicle for treatment.
