South Sudan clashes between two rival communities killed at least 16 people and wounded 34 in Tonj East County, officials said on Thursday 15 October. The fighting ran on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 October.
For US readers, the violence matters because South Sudan relies on aid, and the United States has long been a major donor. Such South Sudan clashes raise the risk to aid workers and to the December vote that Washington wants held safely.
What Happened in Tonj East
Radio Tamazuj, an independent outlet covering South Sudan, reported the toll on Thursday 15 October, citing Machuei Bith, the caretaker commissioner of Tonj East County. Bith said 16 people lost their lives and 34 were wounded on both sides.
The fighting took place in Ngap Agok and Malual Chum, two payams, the districts that make up a South Sudanese county. A retaliatory attack on residential areas of the Thiik community began on the morning of Tuesday 13 October.
Bith told Radio Tamazuj that a member of the Akok Deng Achuil community was killed by unidentified gunmen in Mader Boma. Members of that community suspected their Thiik neighbours and attacked before the authorities could investigate.
Two Counts of the South Sudan Clashes
Sudans Post, another South Sudanese outlet, published a higher count on the same morning, at least 26 dead and 30 injured. In the same report the commissioner is quoted as saying more than 20 people died, so the figures differ.
Sudans Post reports that armed men believed to be from the Akook section ambushed Thiik members on a road near Madeer village on Tuesday. Bith told the outlet the first dead were a young man and a woman.
Both outlets agree on the two communities, the Tuesday retaliation and the commissioner as the main official source. Neither reports a count from hospitals, the United Nations or the army, so the South Sudan clashes toll may change.
Who the Communities Are
Warrap State, scene of the South Sudan clashes, lies in the north-west, and Tonj is one of its main towns. The Akok and Thiik groups are neighbouring sections of the Dinka, South Sudan’s largest ethnic group, who herd cattle and farm.
Local disputes over cattle, land and revenge killings often turn deadly because many young men carry guns left from decades of war. Bona Malual, who chairs the Warrap State Civil Society Network, said the violence has become a daily occurrence across Greater Tonj.
Disarmament and Security Forces
Days before the fighting, national security forces arrived in neighbouring Tonj South County to support peace efforts and prepare a disarmament exercise. Eye Radio, a Juba broadcaster, reported on 11 October that the exercise had not started and no start date had been set.
Gordon Makuer Tiau, the caretaker commissioner of Tonj South, welcomed the troops on behalf of the national government under President Salva Kiir. Sudans Post reports that after the latest clashes Bith informed the Warrap State governor, who promised to coordinate with senior military officers to send forces.
Elections and the United Nations Mission
South Sudan has set national elections for December 2026, after postponing them several times since independence in 2011. President Kiir signed a constitutional amendment on 2 September that removed two legal obstacles, the permanent constitution and the census.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan, known as UNMISS, keeps peacekeepers there under a mandate renewed until 30 April 2027. Radio Tamazuj reported that the Security Council cut the troop ceiling to 12,500 from 17,000 and left the police ceiling at 2,101.
What It Means for US Readers
The United States has long been a major donor to South Sudan’s humanitarian response, and its embassy in Juba presses the leaders on security. On Monday 12 October it condemned a 29 September attack on a food convoy, as the Rio Times reported.
Sudans Post cited the UN humanitarian office: 36 aid workers were killed from January to 19 August 2026, against 31 in all of 2025. South Sudan clashes like these make road deliveries harder and strengthen the case in Washington for tying aid to security.
What Is Not Known
The final death toll is not settled, because officials and Sudans Post gave different figures. Nobody has been named as responsible for the first killing in Mader Boma, and no arrests have been announced.
The government has not said when the disarmament exercise will begin or whether troops will go to Tonj East. No statement from Washington or the United Nations on these clashes had been reported by Thursday afternoon.
