Udupi Deputy Commissioner T. K. Swaroopa on Friday instructed officials concerned to expedite the process, including land acquisition, of establishing four industrial areas in Udupi district.
The land identified for industrial areas are 74.84 acres in Shivapura (Hebri taluk), 38.75 acres in Kerebettu and 50.42 acres in Nitte (Karkala taluk), and 101.19 acres in Uppuru (Brahmavara taluk), she said.
As entrepreneurs are coming forward to establish new industrial ventures in the district, the department should facilitate the ventures by providing necessary infrastructure including roads, water supply, electricity connections, and drainage, she said.
The entrepreneurs should be guided with the ultimate goal of increasing employment opportunities, Ms. Swaroopa said.
She was speaking while presiding over the District-Level Single Window Committee meeting and the ‘Kaigarika Spandana Samiti’ (Industrial Response Committee) meeting at her office.
Regarding the allocation of plots for industrial units in the district, it was noted that during the previous meeting, entrepreneurs had been directed to commence operations on 17 allotted plots. Of these, five have been fully implemented, while construction is under way on nine others. No progress has been observed on the remaining three plots. Meanwhile, more than 15 individuals had submitted requests for the allotment of industrial plots. Hence, she directed that action be taken, in accordance with the rules, for the reallocation of industrial plots that were allotted but where no industrial units have been established.
She noted that currently 92 industrial units are operating in the district. They comprised 38 small-scale, 47 medium-scale, and seven large-scale industries. In accordance with the Sarojini Mahishi Report, a total of 19,572 Kannadigas have been employed in these units thereby achieving an employment rate of 91.42% for locals.
Noting that 484 vacancies exist across various industrial units in the district - for roles such as fitters, electricians, welders, and mechanical positions - she instructed officials to take proactive steps to ensure that local candidates are given the opportunity to fill these posts.
