Have you heard the Carrie news? No, not the fact that Chris Hargensen is ‘carrie red’. Nor that Carrie White, er, burned down the school prom and destroyed most of her town in the process. No, the Carrie news is much brighter than that – Mike Flanagan’s series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel has officially been picked up for a Season 2.
Yes, a Season 2. Even before Season 1 dropped, Flanagan teased that his plans for the show extend way past the novel, hoping for something in the region of three seasons. And – SPOILER ALERT – since Season 1 did indeed end with the prom sequence, and Carrie not dying, there is a clear set-up for more Carrie madness to come. The first season closed out with Carrie on the road with her fellow telekinetically-powered friend Emaline, who has connections to a wider network of mind-meddling people led by Kate Siegel’s mysterious psychic.
In a statement, Flanagan said: “From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next.” King, who is a producer on the show, also gave his blessing for Carrie’s story continuing. “I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White,” he said. “Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling.”
It’s unconfirmed who else will return in Season 2 beyond Summer H. Howell’s Carrie – but it’ll be fascinating to see where Flanagan and his team take the story without King’s roadmap to follow; and to see where he’ll draw further connections into the wider King-verse. Time to Shine.
