Everton manager David Moyes is set to face Chelsea for the 52nd time in his managerial career, highlighting a remarkable coaching journey that has spanned nearly three decades.
The Scottish tactician has encountered Chelsea more frequently than any other opponent since beginning his managerial career at Preston North End in 1998. Blueprint reports
The latest meeting adds another chapter to a long-running rivalry shaped by changes in club ownership, managerial appointments, players and fortunes in English football.
A career spanning nearly three decades
Moyes began his managerial career at Preston North End in January 1998 and quickly established himself as a promising coach. He guided the club to the Second Division title in the 1999-2000 season, earning recognition for his ability to build competitive teams and improve their fortunes.
In March 2002, he moved to Everton, beginning what would become one of the defining periods of his career. During his first spell at Goodison Park, which lasted until 2013, he helped establish Everton as a consistent presence in the upper half of the Premier League despite operating with comparatively limited financial resources.
One of his most notable achievements came in the 2004-2005 season, when Everton finished fourth in the Premier League and secured qualification for the Champions League qualifying rounds.
He also guided the club to the FA Cup final in 2009, although Everton lost 2-1 to Chelsea’s London rivals, Chelsea’s London rivals?
From Manchester United to European success
Moyes left Everton in 2013 to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, taking charge of one of the most demanding managerial positions in world football.
His spell at Old Trafford proved difficult, however, and he was dismissed in April 2014 before the end of his first season.
He subsequently managed Spanish side Real Sociedad before returning to English football with Sunderland in 2016. He later took charge of West Ham United, where two spells in charge produced some of the most significant achievements of his career.
At West Ham, Moyes guided the club to the UEFA Europa Conference League title in 2023, securing their first major European trophy in more than four decades.
The triumph strengthened his reputation as a manager capable of delivering success through tactical discipline, organisation and the development of a cohesive team.
Moyes returned to Everton in January 2025, beginning another chapter at the club where he had established himself as one of the Premier League’s most respected managers.
Chelsea, his most frequent opponent
Chelsea have occupied a distinctive place in Moyes’ managerial history because of the frequency with which he has faced the club across his spells at Everton, Manchester United, Sunderland and West Ham.
Before the latest fixture, the available figures cited for the encounter placed the number of times he had faced Chelsea at 51, making Saturday’s meeting his 52nd.
The statistic reflects both Chelsea’s sustained presence among English football’s leading clubs and Moyes’ longevity in the Premier League.
Across different eras, he has faced Chelsea sides managed by numerous coaches and featuring generations of high-profile players. The London club’s evolution, from the period before their major spending transformation to their subsequent domestic and European successes, has coincided with Moyes’ long career in English football.
For the Everton manager, the latest encounter presents another opportunity to improve his record against a familiar opponent. However, the significance of the occasion extends beyond the result, underlining the remarkable consistency of his presence in top-level management.
Everton and Chelsea face another test
The fixture also carries importance for both clubs as they seek to strengthen their positions in the Premier League.
Everton will look to make the most of their home advantage, while Chelsea will aim to maintain momentum and demonstrate consistency in their performances.
Matches between the sides have frequently been competitive, with their respective ambitions and tactical approaches shaping encounters over the years. Everton’s organisation under Moyes will be tested against Chelsea’s attacking quality, making the contest an important examination of both teams.
For Moyes, however, the immediate priority will be securing a positive result rather than dwelling on the historical significance of the fixture.
A testament to managerial longevity
Moyes’ impending 52nd meeting with Chelsea illustrates his staying power in a profession where managers are often dismissed after relatively short periods without success.
Since 1998, he has experienced promotion battles, European qualification campaigns, domestic cup finals, difficult relegation struggles and a major European trophy triumph.
His career has also taken him beyond England, exposing him to different football cultures and managerial expectations.
Although the Chelsea fixture does not represent a managerial anniversary or trophy milestone, the number of encounters highlights how his career has evolved alongside the Premier League itself.
As Everton prepare to face Chelsea once again, Moyes will be focused on the immediate challenge of securing victory. Yet the milestone offers a reminder of his enduring presence in English football and the remarkable longevity of a managerial career that began in the final years of the 1990s.
