The lawmaker representing Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency of Delta state in the House of Representatives, Hon. Benedict Etanabene, has decried the total blackout in his constituency for more than ten years despite hosting power generating companies.
Speaking to journalists recently after moving the motion on the floor of the House, he said it was of urgent public importance to him and his constituency.
The lawmaker lamented that Sapele has been the host communities of Power plants that supply light to the nation, only watching electricity being evacuated to the national grid without benefiting from it.
Etanabene said the motion was aimed at compelling Generating Companies (GenCos), Transmission Companies of Nigeria (TCN) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to step down power for the host communities.
“My constituency hosts power generating and distribution companies that distribute light to the country, yet we have been in darkness for over ten years. We only see cables conveying electricity from our land to other states while we are left in darkness. It is worrisome and unjust,” said Etanabene.
The lawmaker wondered if the federal government was taking Sapele people for granted because they are peaceful people.
“How can I host a power generating company in my community and not benefit from it in any way? We only see the light being donated to the national grid.
“Is it because Sapele people are not threatening the government and destroying properties like it happens in some oil-producing communities where pipelines are vandalised and the government quickly responds?” he asked.
