Houston Brown considers himself more of a basketball guy.
It’s the sport the Volcano Vista junior dedicates most of his time to. It’s the sport he wants to eventually play in college. It doesn’t hurt that his father, Greg Brown, is the boys basketball coach for the Hawks. Nor that the program is the defending Class 5A champion.
But the junior defensive back might be just as much of a football guy. All the way down to the cutoff long-sleeve shirt — “drip” — he copied from his favorite player: former Alabama and current Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams.
“Football helps me a lot for basketball,” Brown said. “We do a lot of hip stuff, a lot of breaking on routs. Basketball helps be agile, being able to jump and to go get the ball. As a point guard, you gotta see what’s going on and read (a play) before it happens.”

—> Rio Rancho 41, Albuquerque High 13
Rio Rancho couldn’t have scripted a much better beginning on homecoming night.
The Rams jumped out to a 24-0 lead, then cruised to a 41-13 victory over Albuquerque High on Friday night in Rio Rancho. Offense, defense and special teams all played key roles as Rio Rancho landed a damaging early blow from which the Bulldogs never truly recovered.
“We talked about creating turnovers and really just sustaining drives. We've had pieces the last few weeks, and we've had a lot of personnel changes that we're trying to figure out. I thought it gelled tonight,” Rio Rancho coach Nate Pino said. “We actually had a good week of practice where we had the same group rolling, and I think it was good. We're going to continue to get guys back, and we're going to get better as we go.”

—> Valencia 34, Albuquerque Academy 22
If Malachi McCoy looked a little bit like a middle linebacker running the football against Albuquerque Academy, well, that’s because he is.
As injuries and other circumstances tested Valencia’s depth at running back, McCoy stepped in for some serious double duty, rushing for 138 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries in the second half to propel his squad to a 34-22 victory over the Chargers at Richard Harper Memorial Field on Friday afternoon. McCoy finished 142 yards and two touchdowns overall.
The bruising McCoy formed a dynamic tandem with the shifty Santino Mares, who led Valencia with 176 yards rushing and two scores but played sparingly in the second half after injuring his ankle. It wasn’t McCoy’s first rodeo in the backfield, but it was by far his busiest. Still, he didn’t miss a beat on defense either.

A 64 yard touchdown pass from
Isaiah Carpenter to Curtis Flakes III with less than four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Sartans their first lead of the game and carried them to a 42-35 victory over Belen in a battle of top ranked 4A teams.
It was a game that saw spectacular plays, wild swings and plenty of chippiness.
The biggest momentum swing came late in the third quarter. With the Eagles leading 28-21, Belen quarterback Chalito Cano, who rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another, was stopped inside the one yard line on fourth down. On the next play St. Pius running back Herschul Olloway Jr broke through the line and sprinted 99 yards for one of his four touchdowns.
The teams exchanged scores in the fourth quarter before the Sartans finally sealed the victory in a game that did not have a single punt.

—> Del Norte 15, Rio Grande 12
The Knights picked up their first win in over a calendar year, defeating Rio Grande. In an odd twist, Del Norte’s previous victory was Oct. 3, 2025, over the Rio Grande Ravens.
—> Eldorado 48, Clovis 32
Despite two first-half interception, Eldorado quarterback Landon Smith managed to stay calm and lead the No. 7 Eagles to a win over Clovis. It was a scoring fest, with Clovis hitting first on a four-yard touchdown run by KD Everett off a Smith interception. But the Eagles came out of the locker room hot and after Smith hit receiver Jahari Moorhead for a 44-yard TD pass to make it 34-26, the writing was on the wall.

—> Hope Christian 33, Silver 6
A few weeks back, Hope Christian might have had some doubters regarding their place in the Class 3A football hierarchy.
After the third-ranked Huskies (7-1, 4-1 2-3A) dismantled No. 2 Silver 33-6 on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Stadium, there’s no denying Hope’s place among the elite. Perhaps even so much so that some on the team believe they might deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with a certain three-time defending state champion — the one with an ongoing 40-game winning streak.
“I think it's just saying we've arrived,” Huskies junior tight end/defensive end Landon Cochran said. “This team's been stuck kind of waiting to get to the playoffs, and we beat a team of that magnitude. That's a statement to everybody.
“I think this team can do a lot this year. We're ready for St. Mike's, I think.”
