Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) and Stellantis have expanded their long-standing partnership to include advanced vehicle technology and product development, with vehicles developed under the agreement to be manufactured in India for global markets spanning more than 50 countries.
The companies, along with Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), signed a definitive agreement on October 12, building on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in February 2026. The collaboration will combine Tata Motors’ vehicle technology and architecture with Stellantis’ product development and engineering capabilities in India.
India to manufacture vehicles for global markets
Under the agreement, Stellantis will use Tata Motors’ product technology and vehicle architecture to develop vehicles suited to different customer preferences, regulatory requirements and operating conditions across international markets. Manufacturing will take place at Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited (FIAPL), the 50:50 joint venture between the two groups.
The February MoU had outlined broader areas of cooperation, including manufacturing, engineering and supply chains in India and overseas. The latest agreement formalises the collaboration on vehicle technology and architecture.
The companies have not disclosed the vehicle models planned under the partnership, investment commitments, production volumes or timelines for the programme.
Tata Motors, Stellantis build on two-decade relationship
Shailesh Chandra, managing director and chief executive officer of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, said the agreement would extend the partnership into advanced vehicle technology and architecture.
“This Agreement marks an important next step, extending our relationship into advanced vehicle technology and architecture,” Chandra said.
Tianshu Xin, chief operating officer of Stellantis’ Asia-Pacific region, said the collaboration would combine the two companies’ respective capabilities.
“By combining Tata Motors' strong capabilities in India with Stellantis' global product development and market reach, this Agreement will help us develop competitive vehicles in India,” Xin said.
The two companies have worked together for more than two decades through their manufacturing partnership. FIAPL operates an integrated vehicle and powertrain facility at Ranjangaon near Pune, producing models for both groups.
The facility manufactures Stellantis models, including the Jeep Compass and Meridian, alongside Tata Motors vehicles such as the Nexon, Altroz and Curvv. It also exports vehicles to international markets, including Japan and South Africa.
The expanded agreement brings product technology and vehicle architecture into the existing manufacturing relationship, although the commercial details of the proposed global vehicle development programme remain undisclosed.
